CHEVRON B19-71-09

B8
B19-71-9, currently owned by Kevin Wilkins, was originally owned by one of the great stalwarts of British (and Chevron) sportscar racing, John Lepp. Lepp bought one of the first Chevron B3 GTs in 1966 and he would continue to race Chevrons for many years, both sportscars and single-seaters.

1971 saw Lepp racing the Central Garage Mirfield-entered B19-71-9 in both the European and RAC British 2-litre Championships. Lepp's best result in the European series was third in the Martini International at Silverstone whilst in the RAC series he won at Thruxton and finished runner-up at Croft.

James Bell bought the car following the end of year finals in October 1972 at Silverstone where the car won the final round of the Silverstone Formula Libre Championship in John Lepp's hands. The car was actually owned by 2 London architect brothers called John and Leslie Gray.

In 1973 James raced the car with his long time racing partner Ian Harrower: they competed at the Nürburgring at the Interserie round in March and the 1000kms in May, the Monza 1000kms and the Spa 1000kms, Ian also raced the car at Villa Real and Estoril in Portugal after they had returned from Angola where they raced the car in the Luanda 2 Hours finishing 4th, the Nova Lisboa 6 Hours 2nd, and the Benguela 3 Hours (dsq).

In 1974 Ian raced the car at the major European 1000kms races (2nd in class in Austria).

with amongst other co-drivers Ian Bracey and Richard Jones. The car again went to Angola that year and again was reasonably successful.

In early 1975, James sold the car to Jonathan Buncombe who used the chassis as the basis for the infamous 'Chimp' (see below).
